Terps Down Wolfpack With a Late Surge

Written by Anthony Amobi
Monday, 21 February 2011

COLLEGE PARK, MD - It was a close one down the stretch, but the Maryland Terrapins turned it on in the final minutes during Sunday's game against the North Carolina Wolfpack and defeated them, 87-80 at the Comcast Center.
Considering where the Terrapins stand right now, the victory against the Wolfpack was very much needed. With a .500 record (6-6) in the Atlantic Coast Conference with four games to go, they know they need a strong push for tournament consideration after having lost three of their last four games. Duke Outclasses Maryland 80-62

Written by Teddy Callahan-Owusu
Friday, 04 February 2011

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Comcast Center was packed on a freezing, cold Wednesday night for the hottest ticket in town. The spectacle, the f-bombs, the 170th meeting, the bragging rights, the event-otherwise known as Maryland (14-8, 4-4) v. Duke (20-2, 7-1) descended upon College Park in the two teams' second meeting of the season.
While Maryland came into Wednesday night's game on a three-game winning streak high that catapulted them back into the ACC fray, No.5 Duke was coming off an embarrassing loss to St. John's. Both teams, it can be argued, responded to their prior games in the ways that most Terps fans feared: Duke came out firing while Maryland came back only after being fired upon. In the end, the game wasn't much of a contest as it was a display of the disparity in length, talent and skill between the two teams; and with that in mind, the final 80-62 outcome could have been much worse. Maryland Narrowly Defeats Clemson

Written by Anthony Amobi
Sunday, 23 January 2011

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Maryland Terrapins after losing badly to the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thursday and mired in a three-game winless skid needed a win on Saturday.
They accomplished that goal, but not after a struggle with the Clemson Tigers. The Terrapins earned a razor-thin win 79-77 as they built up an eleven point first half lead, but would have to fight in the second half to earn the victory.
Jordan Williams had a historic night for Maryland, getting his 13th consecutive double-double - a school record - with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He broke the mark held by Len Elmore, and after the game, he spoke about the feat. Read more...

Friday, 21 January 2011

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Maryland Terrapins lost to the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thursday evening, 74-57, at the Comcast Center in College Park, MD.
The Terps struggled in the early going, missing their first five shots and committing two turnovers. Unfortunately for Maryland, Virginia Tech came out of the gate on fire, converting their first four shots as they opened up an early 12-0 lead, a lead which they would never relinquish. The Terps were finally able to score their first points of the game with just under 16 minutes remaining in the first half, as senior guard Adrian Bowie nailed a three pointer to cut the Tech lead to nine. The Fridge Ends His Run at Maryland with a Resounding Win in the Military Bowl

Written by Anthony Amobi
Thursday, 30 December 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. - For head coach Ralph Friedgen, his time at the University of Maryland - deserved or not - has come to an end as head coach. However, on Wednesday, he left out with a bang.
The Maryland Terrapins demolished East Carolina in the Military Bowl at old Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington, 51-20. Despite the impressive play of the Terrapins on the F, Friedgen was the center of attention from start to finish.
Although Wednesday's football game was played in the nation's capital, the game was indeed on the Terrapins' turf. The vast majority of fans at RFK Stadium who seemed to root for Maryland -- from start to finish showed support for the players and most importantly, Friedgen, by showing signs, wearing the team colors of red, black and white. Stat Sheet Stocking Stuffer, Terps 89, NJIT 50

Written by Teddy Callahan-Owusu
Thursday, 23 December 2010

COLLEGE PARK, MD - If anyone was looking for a measuring stick game, they must have been watching another. Maryland (8-4) went through what looked more like a scrimmage than a real game against NJIT (2-7). As a matter of fact, it looked more like an inter-squad competition as senior guard Cliff Tucker, who had been replaced in the starting lineup by freshman Pe'Shon Howard, scrapped and clawed his way to 9 first half points and four steals, leading the Terps in a first half where they led by as much as 25 on their way to a 89-50 win. COLLEGE PARK, MD - For the Maryland Terrapins, their first game facing an Atlantic Coast Conference didn't go well as they lost to the Boston College Eagles, 79-75, at the Comcast Center on Friday.
In a close matchup, Boston College edges out Maryland in the final minutes of the game as they were able to close things out. COLLEGE PARK, MD - On Friday night, it was a tale of two halves for the Maryland Terrapins. In the end, the final score will show that Terrapins beat the Elon Phoneix in resounding fashion, 76-57; however, the victory was far tougher than it should have really been.

Costly turnovers doom Terrapins

Written by Teddy Callahan-Owusu
Sunday, 21 November 2010

COLLEGE PARK, MD - This year seemed a season of redemption for the Terrapins. Saturday night's game against the Florida State Seminoles was affirmation. Winning games this year that they would have lost last year, the reassurance that Coach Ralph Friedgen would lead the Terrapins--at the very least--one more year and a packed Capital One F at Byrd Stadium set an ideal backdrop for this season's success story.
But success doesn't just happen without having to work for it, unless you're Kim Kardashian. Maryland found that out early. Read more...

Terps Win First Game in 2K Sports Classic Benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer
COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland officially kicked off the 2010-2011 men's basketball season with a win over Seattle University Monday night at the Comcast Center, 105-76. The game was the first in the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer. Junior guard Sean Mosley lead all scorers with 21 points, while also grabbing four rebounds and dishing out four assists for Maryland.
Both teams struggled out of the gate, scoring a combined nine points in the first five minutes while also committing twelve turnovers. Neither team seemed to be able to find or establish an offensive rhythm, as both teams traded baskets for much of the first half. With twelve minutes remaining, Maryland found themselves trailing by two, with starting point guard Adrian Bowie sitting on the bench after picking up two quick fouls. As a result, freshman guards Pe'Shon Howard and Terrell Stoglin both played significant minutes and helped Maryland pull away slightly to build a ten point halftime lead. Read more...

Terps Make it a Scary Night for Demon Deacons, UMD 62-Wake 14

Written by Teddy Callahan-Owusu
Sunday, 31 October 2010

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Terrapins offense sputtered early, then got on track and then sputtered again all the way to a 62-14 victory. It seemed that the closer the Maryland defense or special teams got the offense; the harder it was for the offense to punch it into the end zone. Case in point, Maryland received the ball on its first possession on the Wake Forest 32-yard line after LaQuan Williams was able to penetrate and partially block Shane Popham's punt. Maryland got off 10 plays but the drive stalled and the Terps only managed a F goal. Read more...

BOSTON, MA - Red shirt Danny O'Brien got back to his impressive play that initially showed he was ready to play on this level as he threw for a career high matching three touchdowns as Maryland (5-2, 2-1) upset Boston College at 24-21.
Maryland's key to victory was its ability to convert on BC miscues including back-to-back turnovers. One, a forced fumble by conference leader Kenny Tate and the other, an interception by Antwine Perez--who had two on the day. Both turnovers resulted in touchdown passes from O' Brien, on to Torrey Smith and the second to Ronnie Tyler. Read more...

Tigers 31-7 Win Over Terps on Special Day for Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. - Maryland (4-2, 1-1) was down and down early against the Clemson Tigers (3-3, 1-2) who entered Saturday afternoon's game winless in the conference at 0-2. The Terrapins entered the game with only one loss this season and an unscathed record in conference play. And with Clemson opponents going a perfect five-for-five on fourth down conversions this season, Maryland's real last chance to turn a 24-7 shellacking into a ball game relied heavily on a third quarter, fourth down conversion at the Clemson 29 yard line. COLLEGE PARK, MD - Both the Maryland Terrapins (4-1, 1-0) and the Duke Blue Devils (1-4, 0-2) came into Saturday evening's game boasting high powered offenses, both with scoring averages above 30 points per game. So when both teams entered the third quarter with Duke leading by a score of 9-7, contagious bewilderment swept the 39,106 attendees at Capital One F at Byrd Stadium. Who Needs a Shell When You Have a Shield

Wednesday, 08 September 2010

COLLEGE PARK, MD - It was a sloppy and cold winter evening at College Park, His Terrapins had just lost 19-17 to Boston College finalizing a 2-10 2009 campaign and Coach Ralph Friedgen slowly trotted out of the bitter weather to be thrown to the wolves.
Last season was abysmal for Ralph Friedgen and his team. Friedgen was dealing with a young group, who played like it all while stressing over thoughts that he might be on his way out as Maryland head coach. Job security would be tough for anyone to deal with all on its own, let alone in the public eye, but Friedgen is a public figure and has been at this for decades. When the Terps were on their way to bowl games (with Ron Vanderlinden's recruiting classes - just mentioning to add a little humility and fact to the statement) Friedgen basked in the glory, but what did he do when things aren't as rosy? How does he behave when success depreciates from being measured in number of wins to whether or not his team can go five minutes without a turnover? Read more...

Young Terrapins Learning How to Win, Down Midshipmen 17-14

Tuesday, 07 September 2010

BALTIMORE, MD - Maryland Head Coach Ralph Friedgen opened his tenth campaign with the Terps amid many uncertainties - the main one being job security, but also how his players, many of whom were freshman last year, would respond after such a dismal season.
What wasn't uncertain for the Terps, was the style of offense they were going to run, and run it they did. Maryland and Navy combined for 673 total rushing yards on the day as the Terrapins squeaked past the Midshipmen 17-14. Read more...

Vasquez, with his team down, and down big for the majority of the game hit clutch shot after clutch shot to give Maryland the lead with under a minute to play. SPOKANE, WA - Entering into Friday night's game, after witnessing the fate of its local area cousin in Georgetown, Maryland (24-8) seemed anxious as the nation's leading scorer Houston (19-16) guard Aubrey Coleman (25.6ppg) got his team off to a quick 4-0 lead to open the game.
The opening moments were very reminiscent of the Hoya's 13-, 4-seed upset: quick, both long and penetrating baskets by the opposition knocked Maryland off balance and into sloppy basketball similar to what befell Georgetown Thursday night. Read more...

Revenge: Maryland's Cold Start Serves Up Win for Tech, 69-64

Saturday, 13 March 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Georgia Tech's (21-11, 8-9) pre-game comments could have inspired the second seeded Terrapins (23-8, 13-4) to come out with energy and put the Yellow Jackets away early but instead it reminded Tech of the win they gave up earlier in the year and the payback it had been wanting to dole out to Maryland ever since. And Tech did just that in the form of a 69-64 win.
Georgia Tech's 20-point lead over North Carolina in the first round of the ACC tournament gave the Yellow Jackets a lot of confidence entering Friday evening's match up against co-ACC regular season champion Maryland, despite Tech's being 7-9 in ACC play coming into the tournament. Read more...

The Talented Mr. Vasquez: Two-Headed Enigma

Greivis Vasquez has the Maryland Terrapins rolling on their way into the ACC tournament. The 6'6" senior guard from Caracas, Venezuela and local area Montrose Christian high school, has been the "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" of Gary Williams' program and fans have grown to love him because and in some cases-- in spite of it.
Vasquez's whole game is a dichotomy. Maryland got off to a slow start against highly regarded teams early this season, losing to Cincinnati and Wisconsin back to back at the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Vasquez was struggling to consistently find an offensive rhythm in Maryland wins but statistically, faired well in Maryland losses. Read more...

Terps Finish with Win Over Cavs 74-68; Clinch ACC Title

CHARLOTTESVILLE, V.A. - ACC title on the line Maryland knew it had to come into Saturday afternoon's game focused. The Terps' were still in a battle with Duke for tops in the conference but were in an early fight with the Virginia Cavaliers; a fight that quickly turned into a mismatch and almost just as quickly, back to a fight as Maryland snuck past Virginia 74-68.
"I am really proud of our team to get 13 wins this year in an even league (ACC)," said Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams. "I am proud of what we did because the beginning of the year we had to put some things together and we had to work hard to get to where we could play and once we did, we were able to sustain it pretty well over the period of 16 games." That is until the 15:47 mark, when the Tigers went on a 19-2 run. In just over six minutes of play the Tigers racked up 19 points while the Terrapins scored one solitary basket. In the blink of an eye the Terps were down 16-31 with 9:29 left in the first half. Read more...

Terps Win On Last Second Shot - Twice

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Sometimes, lightning does strike the same spot twice. Maryland pulled out an amazing, last second win over Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon on a last-second three pointer by junior guard Cliff Tucker, who hit the shot off of a perfect inbound pass from senior guard Eric Hayes with one and a half seconds remaining in the game.
A few moments earlier, Georgia Tech freshman forward Derrick Favors hit a layup that put the Yellow Jackets up by one, 74-73. Following the shot, Maryland inbounded the ball to senior guard Greivis Vasquez , who quickly streaked up to midcourt and launched a three-point prayer that banked off the backboard and into the basket. The Comcast Center erupted into cheers. There was only one problem; Maryland called a timeout before Vasquez shot the ball. Read more...

Clemson Pulls Out Ugly Defensive Win Over Terps 62-53

CLEMSON - The Maryland Terrapins (14-6, 4-2) went into Littlejohn Coliseum Sunday evening in front of 10,000 Tigers fans, looking to defend their number one ACC ranking by trying to take advantage of a struggling, ailing Clemson Tigers (16-6, 4-4) team; they did neither.
Maryland fought hard defensively throughout the game but bad offense combined with Clemson's frustrating ball-hawking defense was too much for the Terrapins' single facetted performance to leave South Carolina with a win. In an ugly game to watch--where both teams had a combined 47 turnovers, and shot 34.6 % (Maryland) and 31.9% (Clemson)--the 21st ranked Tigers were able to eek out ahead of the ACC's top team 62-53. NC State (13-7, 2-4) came into Comcast Center Saturday with convincing wins over ranked ACC teams, Florida State and Duke but looking to stabilize its current up and down month of January which consists of alternating wins and losses.

Maryland's 106-55 victory really says it all. Maryland took an early lead in the game and never looked back. A series of pull-up jumpers and fast-break lay-ups peppered with an explosive dunk by Jordan Williams put the Terps up 6-23 with fourteen minutes left in the first half. COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland (10-4, 1-0) opened its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule Sunday by defeating 18th ranked Florida State (13-3, 1-1) 77-68. Coming off an offensive explosion led by Greivis Vasquez in a win against UNC Greensboro, Maryland looked to prove that they could sustain a high level of play against an opponent of Florida State's stature--who boasts a seven game winning streak with superb defense and overall tough post-play led by potential All-American center Solomon Alabi. Greensboro, N.C. - The Maryland Terrapins (9-4) played a complete ball game Sunday afternoon, on the way to their most thorough of victories as they completely dominated UNC-Greensboro (2-11) 97-63.
Throughout the current season, Maryland has been criticized for displaying a lack of intensity in losses and a lack of urgency in wins. Sunday, however, the team jumped out to an early and aggressive start and never looked back. Read more...

COLLEGE PARK, M.D. - The Maryland Terrapins (8-4) were shocked Wednesday evening by William and Mary (9-2) 83-77, although according to Coach Gary Williams, they shouldn't have been.

Terps Shake Off Rust, Down Winston-Salem

Tuesday, 22 December 2009

COLLEGE PARK, MD - With just over three minutes remaining in the first half and holding a small four point lead, it was clear that the Maryland Men's basketball team was a little rusty following a ten day layoff between games. Fortunately for the Terps, that rust disappeared rather quickly. An 8-0 run to end the first half half put the Terps ahead by 12, a double digit lead that they'd never relinquish as they cruised to a 98-55 point victory.Read more...

Hometown Kid Does in Hometown Team at the BB&T Classic

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Tonight's BB&T Classic game between Villanova and Maryland opened up with some hot shooting and ended with a 95-86 final, as well as, Villanova's Scottie Reynolds receiving MVP honors.
Almost right off the opening tip the two teams combined for four consecutive three point shot makes; unfortunately for Maryland, three out of the four were Villanova made baskets. It seemed every time Villanova scored in the first half that it was three points at a time. As a matter of fact, more than half of Villanova's first half shots (41) were three-point attempts (22). Farewell Seniors, Good Riddance Season: Terps Fall to BC

Written by Teddy Callahan-Owusu

COLLEGE PARK, M.D. - With the scrutiny of his tenure surrounding him, and questions of his job security even a raised subject on the desk of Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, an emotional Ralph Friedgen led his team on the F Saturday against Boston College (8-4) for the final game for 14 Terrapins seniors--of the season and quite possibly, the final game for himself as Maryland head coach. With the game in the balance, Maryland trailing BC 10-16 deep in its own territory and with his future at Maryland at least loosely wrapped around the development of freshman quarterback Jamarr Robinson, as his recruits have drawn much criticism over the years, Coach Friedgen decided to go with the freshman back at quarterback. COLLEGE PARK, M.D. - The Terrapin level of defense was on high from the start of the game. Defense gave way to multiple fast break opportunities and Maryland took full advantage of them on their way to a third straight victory in the early 2009-10 college basketball season. Read more...

Maryland Gets Focused, FairF Gets Roasted

COLLEGE PARK, M.D. - Five straight in-and-outs in the early going for Maryland coupled with very sloppy offensive play had the Terrapins in a battle most were not expecting to be so evenly matched.
FairF freshman guard Derek Needham and junior guard Lyndon Jordan seemed quicker and more alert than anyone else on the floor, breaking Maryland's full court press rather easily and accounting for all of FairF's points as they grabbed an 8-7 lead six minutes into the first half. Read more...

COLLEGE PARK, M.D. - On an overcast and gloomy Saturday afternoon, the Maryland Terrapins welcomed the Virginia Tech Hokies (and apparently most of their fan base) to Capital One F at Byrd Stadium. The day's lack of sunshine wore on the spirits of Maryland football fans, but not nearly as much as the Terrapins' lack of heart. Read more...

Saturday, 14 November 2009

COLLEGE PARK, M.D. -  The first game of the season is finally here and the 16,812 fans at Comcast Center are definitely pumped. There is chatter amongst the crowd that their team can be dangerous this season and every positive play excites them beyond belief. Energy is the best word that comes to mind when describing the home crowd as it seemed to seep into the players, even before tip off, as senior guard Greivis Vasquez and senior forward Landon Milbourne began to bounce up and down, in uniform with each other, and the crowd. RALEIGH, N.C. - The gritty Terrapins were able to fight past an early, crucial mistake only to have that mistake cost them in the end as they fell to North Carolina State 31-38.
On the first play of the game, Terps senior quarterback Chris Turner threw a pass that was intercepted by NC State defensive end Willie Young. Young's interception set up quarterback Russell Wilson's touchdown pass to George Bryan two plays later that put State ahead 7-0 and the Terps in a come-from-behind position with not even one minute expired on the game clock. COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University of Maryland's men's basketball team opened up their exhibition schedule against the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Crimson Hawks Tuesday evening, defeating IUP 75-54.
The student section at Comcast Center seemed to be in midseason form with their chanting, waving and over all involvement in the game. The first play of the game, a Greivis Vasquez steal and coast to coast layup, elicited a home-crowd excitement that remained throughout the contest.Read more...

COLLEGE PARK, MD - There is only one word that can be used to describe Saturday's Maryland-Virginia game: sloppy. Cold, persistent rain made for a contest riddled with fumbles, interceptions, and sacks, giving Virginia it's third straight win over Maryland on Saturday night, 20-9. The Terps have dropped four of their last five games, making a bowl game appearance virtually impossible unless they win four of their next five games. Read more...

WAKE FOREST, NC - Just when Terrapin fans felt their team was safe after winning its first in-conference game, reality sunk in Saturday. Coming into Saturday's game the Maryland offense had been struggling throughout the season and its defense was ranked 12th (last) in the ACC in points allowed. Nonetheless last week the Terrapin defense was able to battle major disadvantages to lead the team to a solid win over Clemson, giving hope to the season and starting the team off to a 1-0 record. Unfortunately, all of this came crashing down Saturday, and in a hurry. Read more...
