Terps Win On Last Second Shot - Twice
Written by David Tucker
Sunday, 21 February 2010
COLLEGE PARK, MD - Sometimes, lightning does strike the same spot twice. Maryland pulled out an amazing, last second win over Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon on a last-second three pointer by junior guard Cliff Tucker, who hit the shot off of a perfect inbound pass from senior guard Eric Hayes with one and a half seconds remaining in the game.
A few moments earlier, Georgia Tech freshman forward Derrick Favors hit a layup that put the Yellow Jackets up by one, 74-73. Following the shot, Maryland inbounded the ball to senior guard Greivis Vasquez , who quickly streaked up to midcourt and launched a three-point prayer that banked off the backboard and into the basket. The Comcast Center erupted into cheers. There was only one problem; Maryland called a timeout before Vasquez shot the ball. Read more...

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Maryland Terrapins (17-7, 7-3 ACC) defeated the Virginia Cavaliers (14-9, 5-5 ACC) on Monday night, 85-66, behind a dominant performance by senior guard Greivis Vasquez, who finished with a game high 30 points, to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and zero turnovers.
"I'm not big on individual performances usually, but what he did tonight was exceptional," said Maryland's head coach Gary Williams about Vasquez's performance Monday night. "I think he really wanted us to get off to a good start. He was really focused. What he did the first half there that was as good as I've seen in a half, against a quality team here at the University of Maryland." Read more...

DURHAM, N.C. - Maryland (16-7, 6-3) came into Saturday afternoon's game against Duke (21-4, 9-2) after six days rest, stomping all over defending champion North Carolina and being only a game behind the Blue Devils for tops in the ACC.
Eighth-ranked Duke was also coming off a win against North Carolina, on the road, and entering Saturday's contest Coach Mike Krzyzewski was looking to get a win on his milestone, 1,000th game after 30 years at Duke.
Despite boasting a larger presence inside, Duke did not appear to be that far ahead of Maryland, at least on paper. Read more...

Clemson Pulls Out Ugly Defensive Win Over Terps 62-53

CLEMSON - The Maryland Terrapins (14-6, 4-2) went into Littlejohn Coliseum Sunday evening in front of 10,000 Tigers fans, looking to defend their number one ACC ranking by trying to take advantage of a struggling, ailing Clemson Tigers (16-6, 4-4) team; they did neither.
Maryland fought hard defensively throughout the game but bad offense combined with Clemson's frustrating ball-hawking defense was too much for the Terrapins' single facetted performance to leave South Carolina with a win. In an ugly game to watch--where both teams had a combined 47 turnovers, and shot 34.6 % (Maryland) and 31.9% (Clemson)--the 21st ranked Tigers were able to eek out ahead of the ACC's top team 62-53. COLLEGE PARK, M.D. - Before Saturday's game, Maryland (13-5, 3-1) sat in second place in the ACC but was still looking for a performance that would turn heads nationally. NC State (13-7, 2-4) came into Comcast Center Saturday with convincing wins over ranked ACC teams, Florida State and Duke but looking to stabilize its current up and down month of January which consists of alternating wins and losses.
The stage for Maryland was set. A rowdy, sell out crowd of 17,950 were in attendance. Coach Gary Williams' 1,000th career game was being televised nationally. And a chance for Maryland to place its ballot in to be considered one of the nation's top teams--as a spot atop the ACC was theirs to be had--was all wrapped up in Saturday evening's game. COLLEGE PARK, MD - After splitting their last two ACC away games with an overtime loss at Wake Forest (83-85) and a strong win against Boston College (73-57), the Maryland Terrapins returned home to Comcast Center tonight to take on the Longwood Lancers from Farmville, VA.
Maryland's 106-55 victory really says it all. Maryland took an early lead in the game and never looked back. A series of pull-up jumpers and fast-break lay-ups peppered with an explosive dunk by Jordan Williams put the Terps up 6-23 with fourteen minutes left in the first half. That 17 point lead was due to the tenacity and energy of Landon Milbourne, Eric Hayes, Sean Mosley and Jordan Williams who collectively stole, blocked, dunked and drove the lane over and over again. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - With less than three seconds remaining in regulation, Maryland sophomore guard Sean Mosley found himself forced to take a potential game winning shot. Up until this moment, Mosley had been fairly quiet. Aside from some key rebounds and hustle plays for loose balls, he was under the radar for most of the game.
That was until Greivis Vasquez held possession of the ball as Maryland (10-5, 1-1) dribbled down the clock in regulation for a chance to win a 76-76 ball game against ACC opponent Wake Forest (12-3, 2-1).

Terps Shake Off Rust, Down Winston-Salem
Written by David Tucker Tuesday, 22 December 2009
COLLEGE PARK, MD - With just over three minutes remaining in the first half and holding a small four point lead, it was clear that the Maryland Men's basketball team was a little rusty following a ten day layoff between games. Fortunately for the Terps, that rust disappeared rather quickly. An 8-0 run to end the first half half put the Terps ahead by 12, a double digit lead that they'd never relinquish as they cruised to a 98-55 point victory.Read more...

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Tonight's BB&T Classic game between Villanova and Maryland opened up with some hot shooting and ended with a 95-86 final, as well as, Villanova's Scottie Reynolds receiving MVP honors.
Almost right off the opening tip the two teams combined for four consecutive three point shot makes; unfortunately for Maryland, three out of the four were Villanova made baskets. It seemed every time Villanova scored in the first half that it was three points at a time. As a matter of fact, more than half of Villanova's first half shots (41) were three-point attempts (22). COLLEGE PARK, M.D. - With the scrutiny of his tenure surrounding him, and questions of his job security even a raised subject on the desk of Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, an emotional Ralph Friedgen led his team on the field Saturday against Boston College (8-4) for the final game for 14 Terrapins seniors--of the season and quite possibly, the final game for himself as Maryland head coach.
With the game in the balance, Maryland trailing BC 10-16 deep in its own territory and with his future at Maryland at least loosely wrapped around the development of freshman quarterback Jamarr Robinson, as his recruits have drawn much criticism over the years, Coach Friedgen decided to go with the freshman back at quarterback. COLLEGE PARK, M.D. - Five straight in-and-outs in the early going for Maryland coupled with very sloppy offensive play had the Terrapins in a battle most were not expecting to be so evenly matched.
Fairfield freshman guard Derek Needham and junior guard Lyndon Jordan seemed quicker and more alert than anyone else on the floor, breaking Maryland's full court press rather easily and accounting for all of Fairfield's points as they grabbed an 8-7 lead six minutes into the first half. There is chatter amongst the crowd that their team can be dangerous this season and every positive play excites them beyond belief. Young's interception set up quarterback Russell Wilson's touchdown pass to George Bryan two plays later that put State ahead 7-0 and the Terps in a come-from-behind position with not even one minute expired on the game clock.

WAKE FOREST, NC - Just when Terrapin fans felt their team was safe after winning its first in-conference game, reality sunk in Saturday. Coming into Saturday's game the Maryland offense had been struggling throughout the season and its defense was ranked 12th (last) in the ACC in points allowed. Nonetheless last week the Terrapin defense was able to battle major disadvantages to lead the team to a solid win over Clemson, giving hope to the season and starting the team off to a 1-0 record.
